About Sports Development

Sports Development's overall aim is;-

“To enable people from the whole of North Northumberland to take part in sports/leisure activities and progress to their chosen level of achievement”

Our main work areas include :

  • Encouraging people to be active for life.
  • Assisting local Clubs to become more sustainable ensuring a safe, effective and child friendly environment.  This includes assisting Clubs to achieve Club Mark or their National Governing Body quality kite mark.
  • Providing funding and development planning advice to community groups.
  • Effective links between school sports programmes and after school and club opportunities.
  • Assisting non-sports organisations with the skills and confidence to provide activities to encourage people to take part in sport and physical activity.
  • More local people becoming coaches and leaders and being active in developing sport.
  • More qualified coaches regularly updating their knowledge and skills.
  • More women and girls taking part in sport and physical activity.
  • More people with disabilities taking part in sport and physical activity.
  • More people with low incomes taking part in sport and physical activity.
  • Good quality opportunities to enable people from the more remote rural areas to take part in sport and physical activity

To help us achieve this we see effective partnerships as the key. We work with many partners including Willowburn Sports and Leisure Centre, schools, particularly school sports coordinators from the North Northumberland, Morpeth / Ponteland and Ashington Partnerships; Northumberland Sport, Alnwick and District Sports Council and Sports Coach UK and the National Governing Bodies for individual sports.

The Sports Development team also co-ordinate Active Alnwick, a multi-agency group made up of partners who are all passionate about providing high quality sport and physical activity to everyone in the Alnwick district.

 Our key focus areas are:

  • Women and girls
  • Adults (working age) and older people
  • Young people
  • People with disabilities
  • Socially excluded groups

The Sports Development Strategy is available to download from this site. There is an Action Plan which accompanies the strategy and is a working document. Copies can be requested from the Sports Development Team.
